Newborn Zebra Hat - FREE PATTERN

Zebra Hat
Size 0-3 Months

Hat
Using an I hook and worsted weight thread (two colors in black and white) and changing colors after each round (I drop one color and pick up the other):
**Join with a slip stitch to the first hdc after each round.**
**Chain 1 at the beginning of each round.**
**Change colors after each round.**

Chain 2

Row 1: In first chain, hdc 8. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch.
Row 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (16 stitches)
Row 3: 2 hdc in first stitch, 1 in the next around (24 stitches)
Row 4: 2 hdc in first stitch, 1 in the next 2 stitches around (32 stitches)
Row 5: 2 hdc in first stitch, 1 in the next 3 stitches around (40 stitches)
Row 6-12: Hdc in each stitch around (40 stitches)

*This hat is for a newborn, and it should measure at least 5 inches in length (I usually try for 5 1/4 inches, for extra room). Depending on your tension, you may need to make more or less rows.*

Row 13-14: Sc in each stitch around (40 stitches). I alternated, making one row white and the other black. You can do that or make it a solid color.Fasten off and weave in ends.

PICTURES TO HELP WITH EARS HERE:  http://adorablyhooked.blogspot.com/2013/04/instructions-for-zebra-ears.html

Outer Ear (Make 2)
Using an H hook and worsted weight thread in black:

Chain 2
4 sc in first stitch
2 sc in each stitch around (8)
Sc in each stitch around (8) - repeat for a total of three times
2 sc in 1 stitch, 1 in next stitch around (12)
Sc in each stitch around (12)
2 sc in 1 stitch, 1 in next 2 stitches around (16)
Sc in each stitch around (16) - repeat for a total of 4 times
Join to first stitch with slip stitch.

Finish off, leaving a long tail.

Inner Ear (Make 2)
Using an H hook and worsted weight thread in white:

Chain 2
1 sc in first chain, chain 1, turn (1 stitch)
2 sc in first stitch, chain 1 turn (2 stitches)
2 sc in first stitch, one in the next, chain 1 and turn (3 stitches)
2 sc in first stitch, one in the next, 2 in the last stitch, chain 1 and turn (5 stitches)
1 sc in each stitch across - repeat this for a total of 3 times (5 stitches)
Chain 1 and sc around the sides and bottom of the inner ear.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to outer ear.

Stitch white inner ear to front of outer ear. When you are done, fold the bottom of the outer ear (lengthwise), and stitch the bottom of the ear together.
Using the picture for placement, sew the ears to the hat.

Optional, using a fuzzy type of yarn (I used Lion Brand Fun Fur) and an I hook, sc around the hdc stitches that make up row 2. Fluff the yarn out for the zebra’s mane.
All done!

Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions.

  8. Hi. I am a beginner and am trying to crochet this adorable hat. I just finished round 5 and am the peak of 40 sts. It seems extremely tiny and I'm wondering what the circumference should be at this stage. Lying flat of the table it is measuring 3.75 inches across. Thanks! Jodi

  9. Hi, Jodi. I just made the hat up to the 40 stitches, and it measured 4 inches across. Your tension seems to be a little tighter than mine. So, you could go up one hook size (to a J), or you can add 5 stitches (increase every 8th stitch).

    Thanks for using the pattern!

  10. Hi, I just came across this today and am trying to make it... it's SO cute! I'm having a little trouble with the directions for the outer ears though... are them meant to be done in a round (ie circle) or are you supposed to turn after each row and go back and forth (like you do with the inner ears? Just seems to be making a tube when I'm making them... not sure if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks!

  11. Hi, Marlita. It will definitely be in a small tube shape.

    Thanks for using the pattern!

    1. Oh OK... I was worried I was doing something wrong! LOL So then you kind of flatten it so it's double thickness to sew the white bit on? And the narrow end is the bottom?

      Thanks!

  12. Yes, you'll flatten it and sew the white part to the front part of the outer ear.

The narrow end is on top. In other words, the open end, where you finish is on bottom.

  13. Hi Gwen. I'm having problems with the inner ear. I can't seem to figure out how to make it. I'm not sure if you can break it down any more than you have but it just doesn't seem right to me. Do you have any video tutorials on it?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I do not have a video. Give me an idea of the problem, best as you can.

If it helps, the inner ear will be flat, not a tube like the outer ear.

  21. Adorable pattern! I want to make this for my daughter, but I am new to crochet (have always been a knitter). She is a year old, and her head measures 18 inches. How would I go about increasing the pattern to fit her? Thank you! -Meredith

    1. Hi, Meredith! First of all, thank you for using my pattern.

For that size, I'd probably increase it to around 60 stitches.

Since we start with 8 stitches in the ring, the closest you can get to that - evenly - is 56 stitches. That may fit her perfect. Make the hat up to that point, then place on top of her head and see if that's an even fit.

Or...to be simpler, instead of starting with 8 stitches, start with 10 stitches, then increase to an even 60. :)

  23. Hi Gwen
I love this cute hat. I just finished it for our latest granddaughter. I made it using pink instead of black. It turned out so adorable I wish I could post a picture of it. Thank you for posting this pattern for us to use.

  24. I am making this hat (as well as a home made zebra costume for my little lady for halloween). In Minnesota, Oct 31st is usually pretty cold. This pattern is the perfect hat to ensure she stays warm. Im a little confused about the ears...can you help>?

    1. Yes, of course. What sort of help did you need?

  25. Hi,

I'd like some help with the ears too. The outer ear came out in a cone shape. It seems to look different than yours.

When you say to slip stitch to the first stitch in your directions, do you mean slip stitch to the first stitch made for the ears, or to the first stitch in the round? (I crocheted in the round, did not turn, is that right?)

The inner ear part came out in a triangle shape. I used a single crochet around with black to attach it to the outer ear - is that right?

My ears came out with part of it being bent over. I'm just not getting the same shape you have. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Pictures are great too.

    Thanks so much.

    1. The outer ear should be a cone shape.

Slip stitch to the first stitch means the first stitch of that round. You're finishing off the ear.

The inner ear should be a triangle shape. I whip-stitched mine, but sc in black to attach it to the outer ear should work well.

When you refer to your ear being "bent over" what do you mean? Please email me pictures of your ears.

      Thanks!

    2. Thanks for the quick response. I think I figured out the problem. When making the outer ear, I was crocheting in the round instead of turning the work. The last slip stitch in your directions for the outer ear give you the cone shape desired. Crocheting in the round is what caused the problem for me.

Thanks again. Now I have cute ears!

  27. Do u have something of the same pattern I could make for a toddler say about 3 years old?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, Rachel. I would increase the hat size to between 48 and 56 stitches, depending on the size of your child's head. Then, increase the length until it's long enough. You may have to try it on until you get it right.

      Thanks for using my pattern!

  28. Is the outer part of the ear crocheted in the round or back and forth?

  29. The black part is in the round. The white is back and forth.
